Series 7 (2012-13)

Again, this series was split in two but this time it looked like two mini series... Five episodes in the autumn to complete Amy's run as companion followed by a Christmas episode which introduced Jenna-Louise Coleman as the new one, then seven episodes in the spring to complete what is being called the anniversary series... which meant there wouldn't then be another series until 2014 since all hardcore Who fans know the 50th anniversary is 23rd November 2013...

Episode 1: The Asylum Of The Daleks

Surprises and innovations open the series in this fairly successful attempt to make the Daleks scary again. We were promised every kind of Dalek design and while the hopes for what that might mean were dashed the episode we did get was a corker!

Every Dalek that ever there was... will surely be there for certain because... today's the day the Doctor helps the Daleks!

Episode 2: Dinosaurs On A Spaceship

The title says it all! It's fun and fast paced. Packed with humour and action. The design and effects are stunning. The presentation may be a little light-hearted but it is a fully fleshed out adventure with a heart and soul at the centre. The Doctor has gathered help from across time to face what ultimately turns out to be a foe from across time

Episode 3: A Town Called Mercy

A space Western that turns out to be a normal Western... but with a twist of Terminator thrown in. An episode that had potential but a story that was let down by the telling. Sometimes an artist needs to step back from his work to see whether it works or not... I say this one is a 'not' unfortunately.

Episode 4: The Power Of Three

Little boxes. Little black boxes, slowly invading the Earth and doing nothing, absolutely nothing. Sometimes life with the Doctor goes so fast and the time without him is so quiet... those two worlds are about to collide but what will be the outcome?

Episode 5: The Angels Take Manhattan

The Weeping Angels are back and we know it's the final episode for Amy... does her future lie in the hands of the Angels or does fate have other plans for the Eleventh Doctor's first companion? And what about Rory, the centurion who waited two thousand years, the man who died and died again...?

Episode 6: The Snowmen

The Christmas special that was set to introduce the new companion... a Victorian governess leading a double life... There are old friend and old enemies to be found in the snow but plenty of twists and surprises to make this the best Christmas special to date and one of the best companion introductions ever...

Episode 7: The Bells Of Saint John

Easter came and the Doctor returned... brooding like a solitary monk in 1207, pondering the mystery of the woman twice dead when he is alerted to a problem in the wifi world of 2013. This is more than a technical problem and it's going to take more than a monk to fix it!

Episode 8: The Rings of Akhaten

We were promised a scene with hundreds of different species of alien... clearly it was going to be a crowd scene right? Beyond that, there are reminders of The Beast Below and Clara uses her natural child-care skills. We also get to see a little more of her background

Episode 9: Cold War

The title says it nicely. We land on a soviet submarine in 1983, the cold war is thawing but still very cold... we encounter our own cold war stand-off and there's an Ice Warrior thawing down below. Mark Gatiss brings his favourite adversary back to the show after 39 years and generally doesn't disappoint...

Episode 10: Hide

Ghost hunting in the 1970s with a very subtle dusting of romance... there's a Doctor Who twist of course, but that doesn't stop it from being spooky and creepy. Even the TARDIS seems reluctant...

Episode 11: Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS

It's bigger on the inside... and so is this adventure... taking is to depths unimagined and far better than The Invasion Of Time and more structured than The Doctor's Wife

Episode 12: The Crimson Horror

Mother and daughter play mother and daughter as Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling co star in this dark but comic Victorian adventure, but where are the Doctor and Clara? This looked set to be another good one and on this occasion, Mark Gatiss didn't disappoint...

Episode 13 : Nightmare In Silver

The Cybermen are back with some sleek and stylish upgrades. There's a castle, Warwick Davis and chess... with Neil Gaiman writing the script there's sure to be some quality as well near the series finalé...

Episode 14: The Name Of The Doctor

The Doctor has a secret he will take to his grave. And it is discovered... A series finale that felt epic and didn't even remotely disappoint this fan.

50th Anniversary: The Day Of The Doctor

I'd anticipated this one since the series returned in 2005 and I realised we had just missed the 40th Anniversary! Simulcast around the world in 94 different countries and filmed in 3D, this was going to be massive... and ignoring a few niggles, it did not disappoint. Three Doctors, two returning adversaries, the Time Lords, and several loose ends tied up... what's not to like?

Christmas 2013: The Time Of The Doctor

On the fields of Trenzalore, at the Fall of the Eleventh, when no creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a question will be asked. A question that must never ever be answered. The First Question, the oldest question in the Universe, hidden in plain sight. Doctor who?
